How to free up storage on Android without losing what matters

Phone storage full? See what uses space on Android, then clear cache, duplicates, large files, chat media and offline downloads safely. No RAM boosters.

Quick answer

Start in your phone's storage settings to see what is using space. Then remove apps you no longer use, clear large old downloads and duplicate files, manage the media saved by messaging apps and delete offline videos and music you have finished with. Empty the recycle bin at the end.

1. See what is using your storage

Open Settings and search for Storage. Android shows how much space apps, images, videos, audio, documents and system files take. On Samsung phones, storage is under Device care or Battery and device care. A storage analyzer in a file manager goes further and shows which folders and files are the largest.

2. Remove or archive apps you do not use

Apps and their data are often the biggest category. Uninstall apps you have not opened in months. On recent versions of Android and Google Play you can also archive an app: most of it is removed, but your data and the icon stay, so you can restore it later.

3. Clear app cache, not app data

  1. Open Settings > Apps and choose an app that uses a lot of space.
  2. Open Storage (on some phones, Storage & cache).
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Note: Clear cache removes temporary files the app will rebuild. Clear storage or Clear data is different: it resets the app and can delete offline files, downloads and settings.

4. Clean out Downloads and large files

The Downloads folder collects installers, PDFs, videos and archives you only needed once. Sort it by size, delete what you no longer need, and remove ZIP or RAR files you have already extracted. Fylo's storage cleanup lists large and old files from across your storage, so you can review them in one place.

5. Delete duplicate files

Copies of the same photo, video or document add up quickly. A duplicate finder groups matching files so you can keep one copy of each.

6. Manage messaging app storage

WhatsApp, Telegram and similar apps keep every photo, video, voice note and document you receive. Use each app's own storage screen, such as Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage in WhatsApp, to see which chats use the most space and remove large files. Turning off automatic media downloads stops the folder filling up again.

7. Remove photos and videos that are already backed up

If your photos back up to a cloud service, the copies on the phone can go. Google Photos has a Free up space option that removes items from the device only once they are backed up. Check that the backup has finished before you use it.

8. Delete offline downloads in streaming apps

Music, podcast, video and map apps can hold gigabytes of offline downloads. Open each app's downloads or storage settings and remove what you have finished with.

9. Empty the recycle bin

Many file managers and gallery apps move deleted items to a recycle bin or trash first. It is a useful safety net, but the files keep using space until the bin is emptied or they expire.

What to avoid

  • "RAM booster" and "phone cleaner" apps that promise speed. Android manages memory itself, and closing background apps does not free storage.
  • Deleting folders you do not recognise, especially Android/data, Android/obb and system folders. They belong to apps and to Android.
  • Clearing app data for apps that hold offline content you want to keep.
  • Paying a subscription just to clean storage. A file manager with a storage analyzer does the same job.

Questions

What takes up the most storage on Android?

Usually photos and videos, apps and their data, and media saved by messaging apps. Your phone's storage settings show the breakdown.

Is it safe to clear cache on Android?

Yes. Cache is temporary data that apps rebuild. Clear cache does not remove your account or files, unlike Clear storage or Clear data.

Do storage cleaner apps work?

Tools that show what is using space and help you delete it work well. Apps that only promise to boost speed or clean RAM do little, because Android already manages memory.

Is there a free storage cleaner without ads or a subscription?

Yes. Fylo is free and has no ads, and its storage analyzer, large file finder and duplicate finder are part of the free app.

Why does my phone still say storage is full after deleting files?

Deleted files may still be in a recycle bin or trash in your file manager, gallery or Google Photos. Empty those to get the space back.
